In Spanish the question "What time is it?" always stays the same:
If you haven't notice, Spanish has many rules about number. Things that are plural and things that are singular in Spanish are very different. We see this when we talk about time. Listen to the podcast to find out more.
Hablemos Sobre El Salvador - Let's Talk About El Salvador
Ever wondered what the weird little skinny part of the Americas is between North and South America? Well they don't consider us one of the 7 continents, but we are a world of our own. Central America is enough it's own culture as any other continent on this earth. Not only are we the joining of two continents, but each individual country within hundreds of miles of each other is so unique that we can clearly distinguish each other. I mean look at the map! We are literally neighbours!
El Lago de Ilopango
Isn't it incredible that this lake is on the crater of a volcano? It's literally 72 km squared.
(This is the mouth of a volcano.)
This video almost made me cry because it truly shows you the beauties of my country.

This week, we're going to learn how to express dates in Spanish - learn the months of the year and numbers from 0-31, some tricks for pronunciation in Spanish and Guatemala.
One of the hardest things for my students to do in Spanish is produce the magical sound of the letter R in Spanish. In Spanish this letter has a soft roll but when doubled has a pretty specific roll. We see it in words like "caro" (expensive) and "carro" (car).
Here is a tip: If you are an English speaker, linguistically the letter R in Spanish is produced in the same spot as the letter D. Try it say Da and now try Ra.. Da Ra… The difference between the sound da and ra is a play between how much vibration happens between your tongue and your palette. So try this exercise to start pronouncing the letter R! |
If you want some detailed instruction on making the sound check out this Youtube video.

This week we looked at: 4 Important Questions to use when introducing yourself, we discussed the importance of making language goals, and discovered some interesting facts about Belize.
What are your language goals?
Here are some examples of "false friends" or "falsos amigos". My favourite on this list is abogado and avocado. A fruit and a lawyer = very different!
Check out more of these false friends by clicking on the link below.

As mentioned in the podcast, geographically, Belize is in line with many countries in the Caribbean including: Jamaica, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Here you can see one of Belize's many cays, also known as small islands. I would not mind owning one of these!
